There may be another benefit to your Amazon Prime subscription soon: a new Amazon Kindle. TechCrunch has a report from a reliable source that claims just that.
How will Amazon do this without losing their proverbial shirt?
For starters, here’s what we know about Amazon’s Prime customer base (pun intended):
- They’re loyal. The purchase multiple items each month from the online retailer.
- Service and convenience is important to them. They’re willing to pay $79 a year for benefits like free two-day shipping and discounted next-day shipping.
- They read. Add Kindle books to the multiple purchases mentioned above.
We don’t know how many subscribers to Amazon Prime there are but if they buy “enough” books over the course of a year or two, the subsidized (free) Kindle model could work.
Producing Kindle’s at that volume would also bring the cost of the device down for those customers who aren’t Prime subscribers, which would be a big added bonus and help facilitate adoption.
I’ll wait for the color Kindle with WiFi, thankyouverymuch.
Would you take the free Kindle instead of buying an iPad?
