Pre-Order Your iPad Next Week? [Update]

Get out your credit cards, debit cards and any other electronic payments that Apple might accept.

AppAdvice.com has it on good account from “a reliable source of ours familiar with the matter” that the iPad could go on sale for pre-order as early as February 25th. You still won’t get it before the end of March, but at least you’ll be in the queue. One can only hope that Apple will ship them on a first-come, first-serve basis.

These will likely be for the WiFi model and only in the U.S. (sorry international peeps).

The big question is: Does anyone actually believe this will actually happen?

Apple likes to demonstrate demand for its products, especially new, category-creating products. They want the public and the media to see lines at the Apple Store like the one above. It’s newsworthy, creates buzz.

Pre-ordering doesn’t allow for this unless, of course, they decide to push people to their local Apple Store for pickup. Even then, I think it’s unlikely.

The only reason I could envision Apple going in this direction is gauge demand and adjust their supply chain accordingly but even then, it would be almost like admitting that they didn’t believe it will be a success.

And, lest we forget, neither the WiFi nor the WiFi + 3G model has been approved by the FCC, yet.

On a ten point scale, the likelihood of this happening is a 3, at best.
