Magical Tablet reader Dave Emery pointed me toward a product idea on Quirky.com for an iPad Refrigerator Mount for your kitchen. Dave is interested in such a mount for his home, as well as one for his home workshop (he’s a model train aficionado).
Submitted by Quirky member Wendy Skavlem, her general concept is as follows:
A frame with detachable case/skin for the iPad that you can mount on your refrigerator, around the center or “hub” of family activity. The iPad refrigerator mount would have a swivel mechanism to view vertically or horizontally. The case/skin with iPad can be easily removed for use elsewhere and would have a kickstand (similar to a picture frame) that can be propped vertically or horizontally. The package would come with a screen protector.
Functionality/Design
- Attaches securely to the refrigerator (or wall) – Using 3M Command picture hanging strips (or similar) that can be easily readjusted and moved or removed with no damage to the surface.
- Swivel mechanism for vertical or horizontal viewing.
- Case/skin that can be removed (with iPad) easily for recharge* or use elsewhere.
- The frame” would stay on the refrigerator/wall and the IPad would have a case/skin that would attach to the “frame” and can be easily removed.
- The case/skin in design would be similar to the iPhone/iPod cases.
- However, the cover/case would also have a “kickstand” similar to a picture frame so that you could prop the iPad either vertically or horizontally.
- The case/skin would be able to accommodate plug-ins and recharge.
- Proposed material: shatterproof polycarbonate (and shock resistant rubber)
You can read her complete proposal on Quirky.com (link below), though you’ll have to scroll down the page a bit – the site makes it a bit difficult to link directly to individual project proposals.
Wendy goes on to describe her fridge-mounted iPad as a “Family Hub” – a good use for a device such as the iPad. I personally wouldn’t spend the money on a portable device such as the iPad only to relegate most of its existence to the refrigerator, but I can absolutely see the value in having one located there. Heck – it’s a lot better than the “net connected refrigerator” concepts that appliance manufacturers have been floating for years.
Would you use your iPad like this? Is a refrigerator mount useful to you?
