Gigabyte Prepping Android eReader with E-Ink Display (Video!)

Android eReader by GigabyteI don’t normally write about the average eReader here but this isn’t your average eReader. It’s the “World’s First” eReader with an E-ink display running Android. (Yes, you read that correctly.) Android 1.5 to be exact.

The hardware specs are what you might expect: 128MB NAND flash storage, E-ink display at 800 x 600 resolution with 16 levels of grayscale, and EPSON display controller and Wolfson Audio controller.

Bottom line: It’s promising, but obviously a work in progress. It may work perfectly fine as simply an eReader (FBReader looks great), but navigating the home screen and menus appears to be a painful task due to the refresh rate of the E-Ink screen.Video after the jump.

Nook eReader is Barnes & Noble’s ‘Best-Selling Product’ and ‘Critical to the Company’s Success’

Barnes & Noble Nook eReaderIn a conference call with investors yesterday, Steve Riggio, CEO of Barnes and Noble, described the Nook eReader as their  ”single best-selling” Barnes & Noble branded product and “critical to the Company’s success”.

I find both comments very surprising.

First, how many other significant Barnes & Noble-branded products does the company offer? (Sketchbooks don’t count.)

iPad in Higher EducationWhen incoming first year students enroll at George Fox University, they’ll have to make a choice about which computing device they would prefer: an Apple MacBook or iPad.

That’s a big choice for students to make, and an even bolder decision by the University’s administration. The MacBook is a proven general-purpose mobile computing platform while the iPad is…not. At least not yet.

Five Things That Will Make eReaders Better in 2010

Color eReader

Image / Wired

The folks at Wired think that they’ve got the eReader experience nailed – at least for 2010. The five things they think will make eReaders better this year are:

  1. Touch
  2. Color
  3. Flexibility
  4. Better Software
  5. More Contrast

I’m not sure about “More Contrast” since the contrast on, say, a Kindle 2 e-ink screen is (basically) the equivalent of newsprint. “Flexbility” is also questionable except for how this feature may protect against damage.

You’ll have to read the entire piece to better understand their position, but it’s worth the trip.

Jeremy Clark at TED Demoing Wired Digital

It was only a matter of time before magazine publishers began to make overtures toward iPad and now we have some definite plans by some large publishers. Wired Magazine demonstrated a version of their upcoming electronic magazine on stage at the TED conference last week and a hands-on video demo appears below. But overcoming the technology concerns is only the first hurdle. Actually, it’s still a hurdle.
