Review: Air Display App for iPad Adds Screen Real Estate to Your Mac

Air Display for iPadAs you probably expected, I carry a lot of gadgets with me. Because of that, I’ve always opted for small notebooks and subsequently, iBooks, PowerBooks and now MacBooks. I use a 13-inch MacBook (and soon, MacBook Pro) because it’s small, light and has great battery life.

When I’m in my office, I use an external display as my primary screen and my MacBook display as secondary. But when I’m on the road, I’m always disappointed by the amount of screen real estate I have to work with when using only the MacBook’s built-in display. So when I saw Air Display for the iPad, I had to give it a try.

Barnes & Noble eReader Software Coming to iPad

Barnes & Noble BN eReader for iPadNot only will Apple have it’s own iBookStore selling titles in ePub format, but it will allow any unprotected ePub formatted eBook to be installed and read on the iPad using the company’s iBooks app.

Amazon already offers its Kindle Reader for iPhone and iPod Touch, so it will be no surprise when they announce their eBook Reader software for iPad. The company also continues to offer the Stanza eBook reader software for iPhone that it acquired last year.

Beating them to the proverbial punch it seems, Barnes & Noble has announced the upcoming availability of its own B&N eReader software “to be released around the time of iPad’s expected availability.”

Apple Creates ‘Explicit’ Category for App Store in Advance of iPad Launch [UPDATE]

App Store Explicit Category - Mature Audiences OnlyAre bikinis and boobs coming back to Apple’s App Store? With the addition of the new “Explicit” category, they just may.

A developer has informed Cult of Mac about the inclusion of the new category, even providing screen shots from the iTunesWebConnect web site. (Screen capture after the jump.)

The addition of this category could hint at a “Mature Audiences-Only” section of the App Store which would hide these types of apps from kids, teens and even grown-ups who might find these types of apps offensive. Does that mean they’ll loosen up their requirements and allow more racier apps, as well?

I’d guess not. However, the segregation of these apps could make life easier for everyone. Or more difficult.

iPad and the Battle for the $.99 TV Episode

Battle for the 99 Cent TV EpisodeApple has been trying to push major television networks over the edge into the realm of the $.99 episode. How successful have they been to date?

PBS has temporarily priced some of its shows like “Arthur,” “Martha Speaks” and “WordGirl” at $.99 while NBC has sold recaps of Olympic events at that price point, the New York Times reports. All shows mentioned are in Standard Definition (SD).

Typically, an episode on iTunes in SD costs$1.99 while HD episodes cost $2.99.

Major networks have been skeptical about the cost of individual episodes, worried that the drop from $1.99 to $.99 would hurt their relationships with affiliates and cable networks. By being “too cheap” (emphasis mine) the concern is that consumers would bypass the shows delivered by local access providers and shift to premium, on-demand video of the same network programming.
